Raúl Gorrín: Can your company survive a decision that will not be successful ?

By Raúl Gorrín. Isn’t it the goal of every successful business to plan on growth initiatives.. A company needs to plan on growing. It can achieve growth and its share of the market, by either investing in advertising and promotions  or by diversifying the services it offers or it may increase its market area. Maybe it  will go from regional to multi-state market or national or even increase to an international market. Other ways it can increase its market is by research and development and coming out with the best and the latest in technology.

The old business rule that growth is essential to the survival of a company. If a company does not have growth then it can become stagnant and can eventually go out of business. So then growth is essential, a good thing, a necessary vision of every company that wants to survive in this tough economy.

So is growth a good thing? The answer is complex and growth does come with its pitfalls. To avoid some of those pitfalls, you must first have a vision. The vision will ask the question of why? Why are you in this Business? Why do you want to put all the effort and money into what you are pursuing? Why are all the people working and pursuing what they are doing? That's the vision; it helps you rationalize as to why are you really into all the stuff you are doing.
Now you have to present your vision to the market and your investors or to your boss. Your customers and investors are really not interested in your vision. They want to know what your strategy is. They want to know with great specificity how you intend on achieving this goal. A statement that “our strategy is to grow” is an aspiration which may motivate you or others, but won’t fool an astute investor. Strategy is not vision and mission, but a design of resources and actions that advances the organization’s interests.  If the interest is to grow, then what specific actions will you take (and sacrifices will you make) to focus on the right things?

Now, Apple Computer or Sony may announce wonderful new innovations and they or a similar company may be your competitor. So your vision may be to come out with a more tech savvy product. Your strategy will give specifics on how you plan on achieving this goal. But strategies have to take into account the cost. There is always the danger that you would run out of money by trying to achieve this growth. Your company may not have the money of the big boys and cost of growth have to be taken into account.

Are you prepared for mistakes. Whenever, you take a chance on greater success and growth , you are taking a risks. It is possible that this vision of growth will be a failure. Sure, right now, you see it as the token of success and will make your company far more successful, but let’s say that turns out not to be the case. Can your company handle a failed attempt or will this put it into financial jeopardy. There will always be unavoidable mistakes. Too, there will be disruption. Can you sense, recognize, and robustly respond to those unpredictable forces?  Can your company survive a decision that will not be successful. By Raúl Gorrín.

Raúl Gorrín: Successful business has two concerns: Today and tomorrow

By Raúl Gorrín .Growth opportunities are different from the core business.  The core business is the present. It is the present productivity of the company. What is happening today.  Management on the day to day business requires working with manufacturing. Keeping its cost down, while at the same time keeping the quality high.

Core business principles would involve a business plan involving sales strategy, operational and financial management, distribution strategies and roll out, risk management, time management, business liability assessment, project management, financial evaluation and projections, IT support, planning and development, policy and procedure, production, labor, accounting, banking, financing  and shipping.

It is a comprehensive range of business services geared to helping you develop a well funded, structured business. Your core business pays the bills for today and allows your company to have that clean bill of health. The day to day business is to keep your customers happy. Delivering the services or shipping the product on time.

There is an old business saying that a successful business has two concerns…
Today….
And …
Tomorrow.

The complexity of running the day to day operations of a company requires talented management, skilled workers and an excellent sales force. There are many companies that are successful one year and go out of business a few years later. One of the reasons is not having proper planning on growth opportunities. What sells today and is making the company very successful will probably be obsolete one year from now. A company needs to find and nurture new-growth opportunities. Without a means toward future growth a present day healthy and profitable company will find that it is a recipe for stagnation.  Stagnation without growth will with time lead to the death of that company. The odds of success are long, even for the best ideas, and in most companies the number of talented mavericks can be counted on one hand.

Success in creating new growth again and again lies in developing a systematic, organizational capability to identify, shape, and nurture new-growth initiatives. And the responsibility for doing that lies with the CEO and the entire senior management team.

Planning on future growth may involve, investment in research and development, employee training. It is a complex balancing act between growth and the day to day core aspects of the business. Management must learn to create innovative new-growth initiatives without losing discipline and focus on the core business.  Reconciling the pressure for short-term earnings with multiplying requests for seed funding. Supporting innovative thinkers and risk takers without signalling neglect of the core business. Finding the time to guide and coach new-growth teams without neglecting the other burning issues on the agenda.

Then let’s not forget the sales force and advertising department in getting the word out and making the company more attractive based on future products. No company is more successful than Apple Computer by talking about future products and creating the excitement for the company based on their future ideas.

It is no easy tasks for a company to balance its growth opportunities with its core day to day operations. By Raúl Gorrín.

Raúl Gorrín. : Positive attitude and successful business

By Raúl Gorrín. Being successful in life is not easy. If you are a student of history of the industrial era, you will see that all the great ones, had many failures. Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, was known to have said that he had on average ten thousand failed attempts before he would be successful. "I Have Not Failed. I've Just Found 10,000 Ways That Won't Work."

Henry Ford kept failing in business and went bankrupt five times. He was later to become one of the richest and most successful business people in history. What was the key that lead him to his success.

The answer to success for Henry Ford was the answer of success for Thomas Edison and for so many others. It was their positive attitude. It was a belief in themselves, that they would succeed, that they had the ability to succeed.

Albert Einstein was also a failure early in his life. He was rejected for a teaching position in his college and was working in a patent office because no one saw much value in him. Einstein knew that for him to be successful, he would have to change his attitude about himself to a more positive one. We cannot solve a problem by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them, a quote by Einstein.

Henry Ford when he wanted to create a car company, people laughed at him and said that he should invent a faster horse. He had so many failures on his way to his success, that the average person would have given up. Thomas Edison was quoted as saying, that after countless failures, success is just one more try away. To hang in there when one has seen repeated failures, when others have mocked your ideas, that takes a real positive attitude that few of us possess. Henry Ford believed that failure was just an opportunity and that failure was nothing to feel disgraced about, what was a disgrace, he said was in fearing to fail.

Having that positive attitude, that tells you not to give up, to believe in yourself, that is the key difference between the great ones and the rest of us.

Michael Jordon during his career missed over 9000 shots, lost almost 300 games, there were  26 times that he missed what could have been the game winning shot. Imagine missing what could have been the game winning shot! Yet, the next game, Michael Jordon would go back to work on his game and be fantastic. His attitude was very positive, it was one that propelled him to achieve his true potential. It was his attitude that did not let him give up when he failed, because his attitude let him know that he was a winner despite a huge recent failure.

Henry Ford expressed this idea best, when he said, “ If you think you can do a thing, or you think that you can not, You are right. “.

Napoleon Hill, a famous motivational speaker and author expressed the idea that often opportunity is disguised as failure.   A positive person would see the opportunity, A negative person would just see it as failure.  By Raúl Gorrín.

Raul Gorrín: The new approach to working hours

By Raul Gorrín. Modern companies have neglected the typical working day of 8 hours based on two criteria: It is inefficient and ineffective. It is recommended to proceed to an optimization of working hours, adding some rest periods to encourage better use of brain power management.

The working day of eight hours was created during the industrial revolution as an attempt to reduce the number of hours of manual labor of factory workers. As is known, cutting hours in the working day he was one of the most significant advances in benefits to the working masses that occurred in the last two hundred years. In the XXI century, that time ceased to have the importance of the past, and many modern companies have classified as a relic meaningless because it represents an obstacle to productivity.

Experts in human resources have become fashionable trend posed a structure different working day. The draugiem group uses an application that measures the amount of time spent by employees on various tasks and compares productivity levels. In developing measurement they found that the length of the working day does not matter much when compared with the way people structure their day. If people take short breaks are more productive than other working nonstop.

Based on that study note the following:
The ideal work-rest ratio should be 52 minutes of work, followed by 17 minutes of rest. People who keep these hours achieve one level of concentration in their tasks. An hour of work in this scheme represents a 100% concentration of the responsibility that plays run.

Workers who are subjected to these times are not distracted by checking the Facebook or emails. When you feel tired take short rest breaks, which helps them to return back to their work with more energy. Eventually those employees are more productive.

Your brain works best when working an hour and 15 minutes rest

Companies that triggered the new structural approach to labor productivity discovered day-break relationship and have managed to far exceed their competitors. At issue is simple to understand, since it is a fundamental need of the human mind, the brain works naturally high-energy jet (about an hour), followed by low-energy jets (15-20 minutes).

For most of us, this natural ebb and flow of energy leaves us to fluctuate between periods of concentration, followed by periods of less productivity, when the buds down and succumb to distractions.

The best way to overcome exhaustion and is getting frustrating distractions during the workday a few minutes of rest. Instead of working for an hour or more and then try to fight not to fall into the distractions and fatigue, it is proposed to take those minutes as a rest period lead us to be more productive.

Complications motivated times, and regulations that have been established by cities to the traditional 8-hour workday, it is recommended that workers break their hours with brief rest intervals. That time can be 10 to 15 minutes will become strategic to align energy and begin the next hour with higher concentration.

Planning a day at intervals of one hour leads to the simplification of tasks in portions, breaking into more manageable parts. The strategy only works because we use our range of peak energy levels to reach an extremely high level of focus for a relatively short period of time.

In the time intervals to take a real break to return to work, it indicates that in their time off can not engage in Facebook or distractions of that nature, but to rest. Get away from your computer, phone, and your to-do list is essential to increase productivity.

Walk, meditate, read and chat are the most effective ways to recharge because they take away from your work.

You should be aware that if you wait until you feel too tired to take a break, it will be too late because the window of maximum productivity was already lost. By Raúl Gorrín.

Raul Gorrín: Lean Management and Productivity

By Raul Gorrín. Companies that have introduced in recent years the scheme teamwork, profit center or flat hierarchies, have been able to increase productivity in a sustainable manner.

This shows a recent study by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). The study is based on data representative of the IAB Establishment Panel that examined responses from more than 8,000 European companies.

In Europe, more and more companies are introducing Lean Management approach or management structures reduced size, which means changing the responsibility down (flat hierarchies). It involves carrying teamwork or create operational units with their own cost and with its own analysis of the results (profit center).

Based on Lean Management -model-based management to create flow to deliver maximum value for customers, using the resources necessary-lows firms organize the participation of employees in small groups, which are allowing decisions to increase motivation and efficiency. This means that the responsible for implementing the lean management should focus on a productive area of the company and consult the views of the workers themselves who perform these processes. Thus, you can go by locating all those details that do not correspond, then edit and delete. This management means better performance, more profit, better quality of life, low risk rates and reduced accident rates.

The system increases the efficiency of the processes of decision-making and production. The ZEW study shows that companies can actually increase productivity with the introduction of Lean Management in their working structures.

The Lean Management requires employees to be flexible and responsible. In companies where this method is adopted, the processes should be developed through open schemes, making knowledgeable workers an essential element in determining and applying these models.

The study also shows that companies that introduce Lean Management is clearly distinguishable from the companies that manage their systems in traditional ways.

The logic behind this business system is to produce what the market requires, in quantity, at the right, put in the right place at the right cost and time. In short, it is to produce more with less. It is not just workers, but all the resources involved in the production line. By Raúl Gorrín.

Raul Gorrín: Productivity, a more effective tool for your company's health

Raul Gorrín. And who has not heard of productivity?. For more than a decade, companies have turned to test models to improve productivity and even many have created their own based on the creation of value and profitability systems.

Companies have made assessments and invest in the generation of a management model that significantly reduces the risks of uncertainty and prevent at least 40% of the costs of the company are the product of internal downtime. Raul Gorrín: Productivity, sustainability and competitiveness

Raul Gorrín. Today companies are reviewing each item to allow them to verify the production number. The review of the results given the resources invested to achieve the goals of the organization.

It is essential to run good management to achieve optimum levels of productivity. The aim of this management is to improve the productivity, sustainability and competitiveness, ensuring viability of the company. Much of the actions that are used to achieve optimization is planning goals and objectives are to be achieved. However, it should be clear that target business objectives is not an easy task as there are distracting elements that can prevent those goals are completed.

In many companies, employees work long hours but do not always achieve the expected goals. It is therefore important that we work to have clear values, mission and vision of the company, with the aim of improving communication, motivate staff and increase productivity.

Companies should emphasize motivating employees, stimulate their creativity in order to realize the goals and generate changes in the organization, which eventually allows to increase business productivity.

Creativity is a prerequisite for the survival of any business requirement, which enables us to ensure a competitive position in the market and deal with the constant changes thereof.
